It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Emily Dorine Brough (“Dorine”). Dorine is survived by her sister Donna, sister-in-law Julie, her sons Rob (Steve), Doug, and Jim (Tammy), her daughter-in-law Kim and grandchildren Lee (Shannon) and Taylor, and the many friends she touched throughout her life. She is predeceased by her husband Robert W. Brough (“Bob”).
Dorine was born on June 29, 1927 in Chapleau, Ontario, and spent the earliest part of her youth in Franz, a railway town in northern Ontario. During the Great Depression, the family moved first to Coatsworth (Kent County) and later to Hamilton. Dorine married her high school sweetheart Bob in 1950.
Dorine lost most of her hearing while younger, and handled this with typical grace, determination and intelligence. She learned to lip read and compensate in many ways so she didn’t miss a beat. She demonstrated this resilience throughout her life, especially in her last years when she faced many health problems. Dorine bounced back again and again, armed with faith, dignity, high expectations of herself, and an ability to compensate for her increasing physical limitations. She was helped by devoted family members, excellent doctors, and spiritual care from her beloved pastor and friend Sandra Copland.
In Dorine’s last days, a fast-acting pneumonia infection finally overwhelmed her defenses. Before that she had been steadily recovering from a prior illness, a confirmation of her indomitable life force.
Dorine is fondly remembered by her grandchildren Lee and Taylor, who have many tales about the time they spent with their grandmother. Lee was honoured to be at his grandma’s side when she passed away in the early morning of February 1, 2020.
A small family funeral will be held on Saturday February 8th. A Celebration of Life where her friends can share their memories will be held on Saturday February 22nd from 1 to 3 pm at Caroline Place Retirement Residence, 118 Market Street, Hamilton.
Dorine supported charities all her life. So in lieu of flowers the family requests donations to 4-star charities such as World Vision Canada, Wesley Urban Ministries, or Doctors Without Frontiers.
