It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Deborah Anne Portillo, born on June 30, 1952, who left us on November 25, 2023, surrounded by family, after a brief and courageous battle with illness.
A devoted wife to husband, Ermelo (Mel), a cherished daughter to Kenneth and late Ruth Sutton, a nurturing mother to Jamie (Jennifer) and Danny Potter, a doting grandmother to Cecily and Katie Potter, predeceased by her sister, Brenda Persson, a dear aunt to Ben Persson and many nieces and nephews.
She retired from a fulfilling and distinguished nursing career from Joseph Brant Hospital. Her commitment to patient care, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the well being of others set a standard that left behind a lasting impact on both her patients and colleagues.
Deb lived a vibrant life filled with diverse interests. An outdoor enthusiast, Deb surrounded herself with nature through various activities, finding comfort and inspiration in the great outdoors. In quieter moments, she could be found immersed in a good book, expanding her knowledge and imagination. She found joy and exhilaration on the open road, during her younger years, embracing her passion for motorcycling with enthusiasm, and experienced travelling adventures with her family and many friends. She was a true baker at heart, impressing everyone with her tasty baked treats especially at Christmas time. A skillful and patient knitter, she crafted intricate pieces that became treasured heirlooms.
Another love that defines her life was sports. Deb's passion for baseball has been a constant thread throughout her life. In her earlier years, she actively played the game. As the years passed and the demands of the game evolved, the transition to being a scorekeeper allowed her to stay intimately involved in the game she cherished. It was a meaningful way for her to contribute to the team and continue her lifelong journey of the sports she loved. In addition to her passion for baseball, she also took pleasure in watching hockey and football. Recently, she was captivated by a new leisure pursuit, weekly mahjong at the Burlington Seniors Centre, a traditional Chinese tile game she enthusiastically embraced alongside her friend Joanne who introduced her to it.
Deb was the epitome of a family-oriented mother, radiating warmth and affection that extended not only to her immediate family but also to her in-laws, the Portillo family. She created an environment where all felt not only welcomed but genuinely valued. Her capacity for love didn't stop there. Many special friendships adorned her life and these friendships developed to be an extension of her chosen family.
Her legacy is one of love, laughter, and a zest for life. Debbie's warm spirit and caring nature will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
"Always willing to help others, when she herself should be at rest. She was the kindest of all mothers, now amongst the heavenly best."
Cremation has taken place and a memorial visitation will be held Friday. December 8, 2023 from 2 - 4 pm and from 6 - 9 pm at Marlatt Funeral Home, 615 Main Street East, Hamilton.
Burial service and reception will be held up north in Kearney, Ontario where she will be laid to rest beside her Mother, Ruth and sister, Brenda at a later date.
