Ruth "Betsy" Betz Smith

Ruth “Betsy” Smith (nee Betz), age 95, passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Tri-County Extended Care in Fairfield, OH. She was born on November 8, 1921 in Gunnison, CO to the late Frank and Stella (Meves) Betz. In December 1948, Betsy married Dr. James M. Smith who preceded her in death in April 1993. She received her nursing degree from the University of Iowa and earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago. Betsy worked as a surgical and E.R. nurse. In April 1999 she married John Vincent Smith who preceded her in death in 2007. Betsy is survived by her sons, Thomas Smith and Christopher (Colleen) Smith; daughter-in-law, Regina Smith; grandchildren, J.T. Smith, Jonathan Smith and Olivia Smith; step-grandchildren, Ryan Brandner and Jaclyn Cook; and sister, Marion Duhachek. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; son, Stephen Smith; and sister, Margaret Ramsdell. A Family Graveside Service will be held at Fellowship Cemetery in Union Township, OH. Per Betsy’s wishes, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to either the National Wildlife Federation, PO Box 1691, Merrifield, VA 22116 or to the Hamilton Community Foundation, 319 N. 3rd Street, Hamilton, OH 45011.
