He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Marie Downie, who passed away in 2007. He leaves behind his three children: Patricia Mondy of Cincinnati, Thomas Wooten (Tina) of Marion, Indiana and Mary Jo Johnson (Doug) of West Chester. He is also survived by his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Andrew (Holly) Momper and their son Kaiden, Adam (Sarah) Momper and their daughter Emmerson; Jesica (Rob) Mueller, Tanum Wooten, Henry (Danielle) Wooten and their daughter Camilla; Catherine Johnson, Michelle (Brenden) Blackburn, Carolyn Johnson and Scott Johnson. Roy was born in Hamilton on November 27, 1917, the only child of James and Grace (Johnson) Wooten. He grew up and attended school in Hamilton, graduating from Hamilton High in 1936. Roy was a radio operator in the Pacific Theater in World War II. While on military leave during Christmas of 1942, Roy married Dorothy, his beloved “Dot” – literally the girl next door. They raised their three children in their home in Highland Park, and were longtime parishioners of St. Mary’s and St. Peter in Chains churches. Roy worked as an accountant at General Motors’ Fisher Body plant for 37 years. He followed many sports, but he especially loved baseball, which he played as a child and through men’s leagues in high school. For years he coached Little League, attended Reds games, and listened to almost every game. Roy’s last five years were spent at Brookwood Retirement Community, where he enjoyed visiting with family and friends, teasing all the nurses, watching sports, following the stock market, and listening to big band music. He recently celebrated his 100th birthday with his large family, a very proud accomplishment. Roy and his many stories about baseball, Hamilton, the war and his family will live on forever through those he left behind. He will be dearly missed. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 23, 2018 from 9am to 10am at St. Julie Billiart Catholic Parish, 224 Dayton Street, Hamilton. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Friday at the church with Father Rob Muhlenkamp officiating. Entombment will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Haven House Emergency Shelter, 550 High Street, Hamilton, OH 45011.
