Michael Grant Sastre, age 78 of Camden, passed away on January 31, 2023, at the VA Hospice in Dayton. He was born on July 31, 1944, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of the late George Dodson and Jane Hart Messinger. As a child, Michael was adopted by the late Francisco Abel Sastre when his mother Jane remarried. Michael was a professional musician and expert drummer before volunteering to join the United States Army and became a Veteran after serving in Germany as an artillery surveyor. In life, Michael continued to enjoy music, and further enjoyed kayaking, working as a videographer for the United States Olympic White Water Kayaking Team. Michael was an expert marksman, and known well within IPSIC shooting circles. Michael also was a skilled and well-known knife sheath-maker and pioneered several kydex sheath-making practices and techniques. To family and friends, he was known as “Animal.” Michael is survived by his wife Mary Ellen (Spiker) Sastre and his step-children, Chad Michael Meyer, and Mark Adam Meyer, and two step-grandchildren, Jackson Meyer and Taylor Hayes. Michael is also survived by his siblings, including his sister Ana (David) Mittendorf and their children Kate Marek and Stephen Mittendorf; his sister Pam (Henry) Rubio and their children Keven Rubio, Brian Rubio, and Craig Rubio; his sister Susana Sastre; his brother Marcos Sastre IV and his son Marcos Sastre V; and his brother Scott Sastre.
