Donald Allan Sullivan

Don “Sully” Sullivan passed away on January 6, 2023 at the age of 99. He was born July 20, 1923 in Cincinnati to Alma (Fisher) Sullivan and George Allan Sullivan. He moved around a lot in his young life, but settled in Hamilton permanently by 1950. He graduated from Norwood High School in 1941. He served in the US Army from 1944 to 1946 and was discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He attended college in Tempe, AZ and Fort Collins, CO and ultimately graduated summa cum laude from The Ohio State University in 1950. He started his own business, Master Feed and Grain, located on Puthoff Street, in 1950 and sold it in 1968. In the 70’s he worked at Tom’s First Ward Cigar Store, sold real estate, and in 1980 joined Amway and was active for 35 years. During his time in Amway, he made many lifelong friends and always remained loyal to the company. He accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at the Millville Avenue Church of God. His love of Christ never wavered, and he took every opportunity to share that love with anyone who asked. In 2006 he began work at Fort Hamilton Hospital as a patient sitter (looking after patients that could not be left alone) and retired in 2018 at the age of 94. This work was the joy of his life and gave him purpose and another opportunity to share Christ. At Fort Hamilton, everyone knew him not only as Sully, but as “The Candy Man” as he always had candy bars to hand out to all the staff he encountered, and anyone else who looked like they could use some chocolate. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary L. Sullivan (Lynn, Mamaw, Linny-Loo), who faithfully and lovingly took care of him for all those years, but most especially in the last years of his life; children Cara Lee Sullivan, Connie Sullivan, Brian (Christa) Kirby, Carolyn Kirby (Rich) Bowling, Leann Kirby (Terry) Smith; 12 grandchildren: Jenny Beuter (Kevin) Butler, Lisa Beuter (Brandon) Whittamore, Cassie Sullivan, Emma Kirby (Aaron) McMahan, Abby Bowling, Trace Smith, Paige Bowling, Delaney Kirby, Brody Smith, Dani Sullivan, Michael Sullivan, Josh Sullivan; 6 great-grandchildren: Marc (Kally) Butler, Ashley Butler (Alex) Barger, Brendan Blair, Anna Lee Whittamore, Clara McMahan, William McMahan; and 4 great-great-grandchildren: Ethan Butler, Ryland Barger, Tatum Butler, Regan Barger. Sully was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Jeff Sullivan, and his sisters Georgia Mizer and Shirley Gibson. The family will hold a private memorial at a later date.
