Born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario on January 9, 1931 to Bill Gillis and Cathleen MacEachern, and raised in Glendale, Cape Breton by John and Mary MacEachern. Jack was an avid outdoorsman, fast-footed step dancer, sly story-teller and proud speaker of Gaelic, a skill he enjoyed using on unsuspecting telemarketers! Jack moved to Halifax as a teen where he soon became the beloved husband of wife, Stella (nee Judge), for 65 years, and companion to many furry friends whom he cherished over his lifetime. On the last, he retired from Stadacona after many years of service as an electrician, but always happily tinkered in his garage thereafter.
He is survived by siblings Eleanor LaRouche (Ottawa) and Glen Gillis (Quebec), predeceased by wife, Stella, and brothers Billy, Donnie, Gerry and Lloyd, while leaving many loved ones, friends and family alike, who will miss him greatly and remember him fondly.
The family wishes to thank the North End neighbours who came to his and his little dogs' aide the evening of his passing, and, as such, encourage donations be made to the Ward 5 Community Centre in honour of the community he was a proud, long-standing resident of.
At his request, there will be a visitation on Friday, November 22 from 1:30-2:30 at Cruikshank's Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax with interment to follow for close family.
