She was 96 years old.
Verne was born in Halifax to Sidney and Ella (Butler) Westhaver.
She was a life long resident of Halifax, growing up in, what was then called, Tower Road village. Verne attended Tower Road School and chose working in retail in the mid 1940’s. Her organizational skills were challenged by the V E Day riots, restocking the inventory for Wallace Brothers Shoes
In 1947 Verne met Ralph Knapp and married. Their only child (Glendon) was born in 1949.
1950’s wives did not work!
Verne was consumed with the ill health of her son who suffered the affliction of polio. Returning to work in the early 1960’s Verne worked for Wrathall’s Insurance.
Ralph fell ill in the late 1960’s. Verne, again, chose a nurturing role, cared for Ralph for the next twenty years until his passing in 1991.
Calmer times ensued with son Glendon and his wife Carol until dementia made its appearance.
Verne is survived by her son Glendon, (Carol). She was predeceased by her husband Ralph and her parents, Sydney and Ella Westhaver.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was predeceased by her brothers Rev Clyde (Gail) Westhaver, Stephen (Alice) Westhaver, Karl (Thelma) Westhaver, and her sister Gracia (Grace) (Al) Baker. Besides Glendon, she is survived by nieces sand nephews.
A special thanks to the staff of Parkstone’s Sullivan’s Lane for their care and compassion.
There will be no visitation. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Verne was a quiet strong woman, who loved nature and poetry. In remembrance, think of your favorite poem.
