It is with broken hearts that we announce the death of Thomas, age 88. He was born in Korondos, Hungary, the son of the late Ferenc and Margit Kovacs. He was a much-loved husband, father, brother and grandfather. He was a man of great integrity and kindness who devoted his life to his wife Rosa, of 65 years and his family.
Thomas was a ‘Freedom Fighter‘ during the Hungarian Uprising. He and Rosa escaped to Austria with their baby, Barbara, where Rosemary was born shortly after their arrival. The family emigrated to Canada for a safer and better life.
Their family continued to grow with the arrival of daughter Michele, and son, Thomas.
A hard worker in all of his endeavours, his career path included the Canadian National Railway in Moncton, and later with Canada Post in Ottawa.
Dad was multi talented and could fix, repair or build almost anything. When new items entered our home, he would immediately take it apart, study it, and reassemble it. As a result, our family rarely saw service technicians.
He was an outdoorsman. Family vacations were spent camping and exploring their new homeland. He spent time gardening, bee keeping and enjoying their beloved ‘caboose‘ at Shepody Bay, NB. Tom and Rosa’s retirement years were spent wintering in the Yucatan, where they spent time reading, trekking the beach and finally relaxing!
Left to mourn and celebrate his life are: his wife Rosa, his children Barbara (David Stanfield), Rosemary (Rodger Perry), Michele and Thomas and grandchildren: Ken, David, Matthew, Elizabeth, Alexandra, Michele, Julianna, Sam and Killian. Also left to mourn is family in Hungary and Canada.
Guests will be received at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr, Halifax on Saturday, December 7th from 1 - 3 pm. In accordance with Dad’s wishes, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada.
