Stephanie Hurrell, 85 (nee Bligh), of Halifax, wife of Terry and mother of Kathryn died on July 1st 2024. She was the daughter of Muriel (nee Bowman) and Frederick Bligh, born on August 24, 1938 in the village of Caister-on-Sea, near Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. She attended the Priory School and Great Yarmouth Girls High School. She went to Southlands Methodist Teachers’ College, London and taught in schools at Hemsby, Costessey, Gorleston before emigrating with her husband, Terry, to Nova Scotia, Canada in 1967. She and Terry lived in Lockeport, Liverpool and Halifax. Eventually, she became Vice Principal at Gorham School, Liverpool. In 1994, she and Terry retired to live in Halifax.
Stephanie enjoyed teaching young children. As a member of the NSTU, she was president of Queens County branch for four years. Stephanie was for a while secretary of the local Historical Society. When she retired, Stephanie enjoyed learning to quilt and was a member of Town Clock Stitchers and sang with the Dalhousie Chorale.
Surviving beside her loving husband, Terry, of 60 years, are daughter: Kathryn Hurrell (Alan), grand daughter: Ada Rose; sister: Jasmine Golson (Compton), sisters-in-law: Janice Breen (Antrim) and Christine Ferris (Trevor): several cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Besides her parents, Stephanie was predeceased by brothers-in-law, Compton Golson, Brian Hurrell, Antrim Breen and sister-in-law Ann Hurrell.
The body has been cremated. A funeral service will be held at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Saturday, July 20th at 2 pm. Donations in memory of Stephanie may be made to Halifax Hospice or St. Matthew’s United Church Outreach, Halifax. Only family flowers by request.
