
FORD, Sonia Cheryl- 54, of Lower Sackville, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2013 at the Dartmouth General Hospital, following a courageous battle against ALS. Born in Halifax, Sonia was the daughter of Morton and Joyce (Pliskow) Gordon. She attended Queen Elizabeth High School, Halifax, where she met the love of her life, Paul. They were married two years later in her mother's back yard on Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Eight years thereafter their joyous journey into parenthood began.
During her lifetime, Sonia held numerous positions in various retail venues. She also canvassed for several charitable organizations. Sonia could be found volunteering in the library at Hillside Elementary School where she also mentored students and advocated for student rights. She was also known to open her home to youth in need and her compassion was generous to a fault.
Sonia's many joys in life included baking and sewing as well as her love of hostessing family events. Just as passionately as she celebrated her Judaism, Sonia openly embraced people of many faiths, sharing with family and friends many holidays including Hanukkah and Christmas.
Sonia is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Paul; daughter Katheleen (Bruce) Ford, Lower Sackville and their children, Tyler, Ethan and Aviva; sons, Gregory and David, at home;
She is also survived by her parents Morton and Joyce Gordon of Clayton Park and her five siblings; Dianna (Gary) Levin of Halifax; Jeffrey (Carol) of Toronto, Ont.; James (Amy) of Beeton, Ont.; Sheri (Bernard) Myer of Halifax and Myor Gordon of Halifax as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service in Sonia's memory will be held at 2:00 PM, Wed. Dec. 4 at Cruikshank's Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street Halifax. To be officiated by Rabbi David Ellis with interment to follow at Oakridge Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family is suggesting a donation to the ALS Society of Canada or to a charity of their choice.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the staff of the Dartmouth General and QEll Infirmary Hospitals for their compassionate and professional care. Thank you also to all the friends and neighbors who contributed strength, support and kindness to the family throughout this journey.
