On the 18th of January 2020, our beloved Amma, Savitri Deshwal, passed away peacefully. Her daughter Kavita and her son Anuj were by her side.
Born in Daha, UP, India in 1932, she was the daughter of the late Dalel Singh and Sarjayati Rana. She immigrated to Nova Scotia in the 1980s to be closer to her late daughter Geeta (Naipal) who lived in Halifax and to other family members in North America.
Aside from her daughter, she was predeceased by her husband Karan Singh Deshwal and sisters Shakuntala, Sumitra, and Sushil.
She leaves behind younger brothers Om Prakash Rana and Satya Prakash Rana; daughters Suman (Bhopal Singh), Kalpana (Surendra Pal), and Kavita (Raj Singh); sons Anil (Madhu) and Anuj; grandchildren Vivek, Alok, Neeti, Anu Karan, Shantanu, Pourush, Anmol, Kushagr, Shalini, Anshuman, and Richa; great grandchildren Nikhil, Deven, Navin, Ruby, Saya, Vihaan, Mohisha, Kanav, Manan and Nyaye.
Devoted to her faith following Advaita Vedanta philosophy of Hinduism (non-duality), her yajna havan mantras echo in her home village of Badhev, India, her residence in Halifax, and in many other Canadian and US cities where she often visited her family and friends.
She was a pious soul and will be eternally remembered for her energy, warmth, compassion, acceptance, generosity, and social work. Her zest for life was infectious and she was a lifelong student who never stopped learning, be it adopting new technology (communicating via her iPad and activity on social media) or picking up new hobbies like jewelry making, well into her 80s.
She was a visionary within her extended family and the community and was often sought after for her advice and blessings. Her divinity which was reflected in her countenance touched many lives and her indomitable strength inspired others to follow in her revered footsteps. She was a rare soul whose radiance will never dim and whose presence will always linger amongst her loved ones.
Amma Ji’s legacy will live on through her teachings and philosophy that she has imprinted on her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family, friends, and others in the community.
Visitation at the JA Snow Funeral Home (339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax) will commence on Thursday January 23 at 12:00pm followed by a Memorial Service from 1:30pm to 3pm. Havan in her memory will be held at the Hindu Temple, Cork Street on Saturday January 25 at 11:00 am, Prasad (lunch) to follow.
