With profound sadness, Ron’s family announces his peaceful passing on October 4, 2022, in the Palliative Care unit of the VG QEII Hospital. He was born in 1940 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan to Harold and Laura Loucks. He was predeceased by his parents and his son Thomas. He is survived by his wife Ruth, daughter Laura (Trevor), son James, daughter Jill (John), and grandchildren Lilli, Eva and Katarina. He is also survived by his brother Barry (Dawn), niece Karen and nephew Eric (Betsy).
Ron earned Bachelor and Master of Science degrees at the University of British Columbia and a Doctorate at the University of Michigan. His long career began as a research scientist in Coastal Oceanography at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography and continued as a physical oceanographic consultant in private practice with his wife Ruth. His holistic, pioneering approach and significant contributions as a scientist impacted the preservation and sustainability of many ecological systems across borders.
He will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his devotion and holistic approach to environmental issues, his commitment to sustainable agriculture, his respect for the knowledge of fishermen, his care and patience in educating others, and his brave perseverance during a long illness.
His life-long dedication to learning was unwavering and unquestioningly in service to making the world a better place for everyone. Alongside his remarkable career, Ron impacted many people across an intentional spectrum of interests, from beekeeping to kayaking, organic farming to playing soccer, trumpet playing to tutoring high school students in mathematics, each met with a genuinely warm smile and twinkle in his eye - a natural joker, yet always with a purpose.
If ever you have the occasion to hear any big band jazz, be sure to smile and “move your feet!”, as he would do.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations to the Ecology Action Center or other environmental organizations are appreciated. To place an online condolence please visit: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
