I worked with Ron briefly in 1976. He taught me about sustainable agriculture and the joy of rural living.  I respected his world view and I think of him often. My condolences to Ruth and family .  I only now became aware of  Ron’s obit.

Ron was a wonderful individual as the obituary describes . He took time and expressed an interest in whatever you had to  contribute. He often volunteered to gather scientific information at a shore  if he knew you were working on a particular project.  His scientific reports  provide important background information to those who follow . But best of all, it was a pleasure to have spent some time with Ron and Ruth walking Carters  beach.   The photo of Ron may be dated but sure highlights his personality. My condolences to Ruth and family.

Dear Ruth and family,
So many memories of our times together.    It wasn't long after we met at the library where he was tutoring or at the UU Church that we began bouncing ideas off one another.    That lead to what became weekly chats (except summers) for many years.  I loved his view of the world and  were both supporters of organic farming and old growth forestry management.
His response to issues usually began by sharing with me  the system(s) they were part of.   That resonated with me.     We studied Carver's approach to governance together and did some experiments with it a short while.  Always learning.  Always a few chuckles along the way.  
Port Mouton and Maple Creek Farm were special places for Ron. Port Mouton became an increasing focus in Ruth and Ron's lives as the fish farm raised so many questions of sustainability.  Data collection become routine and the community was integrated into the response.   Ruth's homestead there is the beneficiary of many years of rhodo rearing.
A group of men met quarterly at the farm for many years.    I was part of some of those and always enjoyed the camraderie.  Singing into the well; discussing and sometimes repairing the barn, farmhouse or greenhouse; after filling our bellies with our shared offerings, Roger or Peter might lead us through some insightful exercises which led to some enthusiastic beating of drums or whatever was nearby, sharing stories (cattle on the loose, outwitting the deer and beavers) and laughter.  Roger  usually had pancakes going the next morning on the old wood stove.
Ashley and Ron worked hard to get grass fed beef into our hands.   And you might come away with honey, cider or apples too if the year was bountiful. 
Ron always looked forward to visits and contact with family.  Like for most of us, families were always first and foremost.   As it should be.
I can't think of a better influence on my life.    For that I will always be grateful.

Dear Ruth,
My condolences to you and your family.  I am forever grateful that, as a young person, Ron invited me to be part of the adventure at Maple Creek Organic Farm .  He had a way of encouraging the best in people, thinking outside of the box, and having fun while doing hard work.  

I do not doubt that he's found a beautiful field and is playing a riff on his trumpet, the music echoing across the hills.

Saddened to learn of Ron's death. I remember the wisdom and care he brought to the struggle to prevent uranium mining getting a foothold in Nova Scotia in the 1980s. Some time later I invited him to talk to my class at Saint Mary's in the "Writer and Nature" course. He spoke about what he was doing as a part-time farmer and explained how it required him to keep pace with the seasons--otherwise it was like "missing a step in a dance," and ended by reading one of his own (very good) poems.

Ron was a very important person in my life. We met not long after my young daughter passed away. Ron too had endured the terrible loss of a child, we bonded through our mutual loss.  I had on many occasion spend time with Ron, and other men, at Maple Creek Farm and could tell stories about working with his horses Star and Ruby, or about sledding down a snowy hill on a makeshift cardboard sled - but i could never tell the story like Ron. Ron among his many  skills and personal attributes was a gifted story teller. His sharp mind for details, combined with his passion left many glued to his every word.  Ron and the 'Men of Maple Creek' contributed greatly to my mental and personal well being,  I am eternally grateful that Ron came into my life.
Ron was my friend, Ron was my mentor. Ron will be missed, but more importantly Ron will be remembered!!

Dear Ruth and Family,Ron was a brilliant man.It was an honor to work with him on the Port Mouton Bay project when he used science to prove how toxic the fish farm was and how it was damaging the harbor.His knowledge of farming methods was also very educational. Dear Ruth, Jim, and Jill,
Patsy and I have many fond memories of Ron from our years as neighbours on Clayton Park Drive. For example, we remember sharing our snow-blower every winter with Ron as Ruth served as his director of traffic at Howard Crosby’s corner!  We remember as well his exuberant performances on the trumpet at our Christmas parties! And our kids remember visiting Ron’s farm and marvelling at the many agricultural experiments it provided them. Ron was indeed a man of many interests and a great neighbour. We will remember him fondly.
