Nadia was born in Diman, Lebanon, on August 15, 1938. After her father passed away at a young age, she spent part of her childhood with some of her siblings in a convent run by Catholic Nuns. This was instrumental in fostering two passions that lasted her entire life: her strong faith, and a love for sewing.
It was in Diman that she met the love of her life, her husband, the late Boulos Ghosn, who followed her to Halifax in 1961 when she and her family immigrated here.
In Canada she worked in various capacities, but her passion was sewing spending most of her career as a seamstress. For a period, she ran a children’s clothing store, but later returned to being a seamstress and continued as one until her retirement.
She was predeceased by her parents, Youssef and Sadie Francis and by her brothers; George (Josephine), Farid (Chrissy) and Nadim Francis.
She is survived by her loving children, John (Esther), Linda (George Asaff), and Leona (Peter Arab), and her cherished grandchildren, Paul, Matthew, Rachel, Phillip, Peter, Savanah, and Antonio. She will also be sadly missed by her two sisters, Georgette (the late Fouad Ghosn), Theresa (the late Arthur Francis) and many nieces and nephews.
All of us who knew Nadia knew what a loving, passionate, and outgoing woman she was. The happiness of those she loved was always at the forefront of her mind. She had a great sense of humor and when she made you laugh, she would say, “Whether you’re laughing with me, or at me, I’m happy just as long as you’re laughing.”
She instilled a strong work ethic in her children and led by example, even after losing her husband at a young age – she was determined to give them every opportunity possible, but first, a huge home-cooked meal. Nadia was famous for her cooking and baking, especially her kibbe and much-loved and quickly devoured “secret recipe brownies”. The only thing that brought her more pleasure was being surrounded by her beautiful grandchildren. They were the true loves of her life, spending hours watching them play, laughing with them, and giving advice. Even when her health declined, seeing them walk into her room always put a smile on her face.
She was a great woman who was loved and although we feel lost, we take comfort in knowing that she is in heaven, finally reunited with her beloved Boulos who she has missed every day for the last 32 years.
