Melda Roberta (Sear) Murray, born February 8, 1941, passed suddenly in Halifax on November 25, 2017 from terminal cancer. She was the daughter of the late Albert and Emelda Sear. Survived by her loving husband Richard A. Murray; son Cameron (Julie); grandchildren MacKenzie and Isabell, Winnepeg Mb; and sister Gloria O’Hara (Salt Spring Island, BC); brother-in-law, John (Donna) Murray (Hunt’s Point); niece Heather Dennis (Rose Bay). Melda’s love of nature’s flora and fauna was her biggest interest in life. Horses, dogs and birds of all types were important to her. Wherever she went, she had a daily ritual for feeding and observing the wildlife that gave her such great joy. After living in Jamaica for more than ten years, Melda thought there should be a way to assist the country in their development and so it was decided that she and Rick would set up a fund the educate your Jamaicans in persuing engineering degrees, so that after graduation these young engineers could return to Jamaica when they were ready, to assist in this process. In 2012 the Richard and Melda Murray Jamaican Engineering Scholarship was put in place at Dalhousie University, where the first graduate from the program emerged in 2016 in Civil Engineering. Presently there are two young Jamaicans in their second and third years of a four year course. Rick and Melda enjoyed watching these young people adapt to the Canadian culture as they equipped themselves for a future in engineering. Assisting people in getting ahead in life was important to Melda and will go in in perpetuity from the financing put in place for this endeavor. A family service will take place at a later date. No flowers please, but donations maybe be made to Brunswick Street Mission, Feed Nova Scotia or the SPCA.
