It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maurice (Moe) MacDonald on October 5, 2022, with his wife Jackie by his side. Moe was born in Sydney on November 7, 1940 to the late Shaun and Clare (Murphy) MacDonald. He attended Sacred Heart School, Sydney Academy, Xavier Junior College and St. F.X. University.
In 1962, Moe followed in his father’s journalism footsteps and began his career at The Chronicle Herald, working as a Reporter, Editor, Cape Breton Bureau Chief and Sports Editor. He later entered the public relations field and was the Spokesperson and Senior Communications Officer at Nova Scotia Power for 19 years. Upon retirement, Moe did free lance consulting between many wonderful vacations with Jackie, which often included rounds of golf. Throughout his life, Moe devoted many hours to volunteer activities and community organizations in Nova Scotia through coaching, board memberships and executive leadership.
Moe was predeceased by his parents Shaun and Clare, and by Jackie’s parents, John (Jack) and Mary Ellen (Helen) (O’Keefe) Graves, who he loved dearly. He was also predeceased by his brother Gerry, sister Margaret (Marg) and her husband Laurie, brothers-in-law William (Bill) Marshall and Jerry Zwaagstra, and special nieces Jennifer and Laura.
Left behind is his loving wife of 59 years, Jacqueline (Jackie) (Graves), son Shaun (Leanne), daughters Kim and Tracy (John) Embrett, and grandchildren Breagh, Iona, Julia, Shaun, Parker and Hannah. He also leaves behind his siblings Brian (Arlene), Rod (Valerie), Clare (Rhea) Marshall, and Tim, as well as Jackie’s siblings Colleen Zwaagstra, Ted (Debby), Judie Graves, John, Marilyn (Bruce) Johnson and Lou (Debbie), along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, including lifelong friends Stan and Marg Campbell.
A lover of reading, writing, baseball, golf and travelling with Jackie, Moe was a proud Cape Bretoner, who was especially proud of growing up on Intercolonial Street in Sydney’s north end. The memories and stories shared with family and friends over many years leave us knowing it was a special place and time. Moe had a wonderful sense of humour and we will continue to remember his infectious laugh and smile. Above all else, Moe was most proud of his family. He loved Jackie, their children and their grandchildren with all of his heart. He will be missed every day and remain forever with us.
A funeral mass will take place at St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church, 6351 North Street in Halifax on Friday, October 14 at 11:00 am, with Father Owen Connolly officiating.
In line with Moe’s commitment to youth, minor sports, and community, donations in his memory made to the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Breton - Whitney Pier Youth Club (www.bgccb.ca) would be gratefully appreciated.
