Mary Bernadette Wallworth (Walsh) passed away peacefully June 15 at the Halifax Infirmary. Mary leaves behind children Trevor (Amy Crowley), Carole (Geoff Ball), and Bronwyn (Christyne Pigeon) and grandchildren Hannah, Mary Amelia, and Jack Louis. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Barrie Wallworth, and her mother, Marie Walsh.
Born and raised in Halifax, Mary was active in the Navy in her youth and, more recently, with the Somme Branch Legion. In 1960, she married Barrie. In addition to raising their three children, Mary taught music for many years in the school system and at Westphal Family Music. She was also the home organist for many churches in and around Halifax. Keenly involved with Scouting for 35 years, Mary also volunteered at the Halifax Mission to Seafarers and the Nova Scotia Hospital. She was very proud of her certificate in Pastoral Care from the Atlantic School of Theology, putting it to good use at various hospitals.
Creatively, Mary’s talents shone with acting (65 years on the stage), singing (25 years with the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Nova Scotia), leading choirs, and writing poetry and children’s stories. She was proud of having been the voice of Reddy Kilowatt, when she was 5, on CBC, and 8, on CHNS.
In recent years Mary embraced travelling and made many friends on every adventure. Always smiling, always ready with a cheerful word for everyone, Mary enjoyed being the “Mayor of Northwood.” She treasured the residents and staff at Northwood for welcoming her and making her feel at home.
“The song is ended, but the melody lingers on...” Irving Berlin.
A Memorial Service will be held 2 PM -Thursday, July 9, 2015 at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax, with Private Burial in Mount Hermon Cemetery.
