Marie Elizabeth (Betty) Salter (née Salterio), passed away peacefully at home on March 12th at the age of 85, surrounded by her family, after a long battle with dementia. She was predeceased by the love of her life, William (Billy) Salter, in 1990.
Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Josephine (Waller) Salterio. Mom grew up in a loving family in Prince’s Lodge, one of six girls. Betty was also one of the Salterio triplets, which was very rare in those days.
Mom worked for the government before marriage, and after raising their family, worked at Sears part-time, for many years until retirement in 2000. Betty was a faithful member of Saint Lawrence Parish, and later Saint Benedict Parish. Faith was her foundation and rock throughout her life. Betty was a member of Saint Lawrence Choir, The Ladies’ Group, a Catechism teacher, and a Minister of the Eucharist. She was also a pioneer in the Cursillo movement, to name a few.
Betty had many interests including her weekly bowling league, Rummoli group with life-long friends, and many outings and travel with her sisters and best friend Sheila Sullivan.
Betty’s life was full with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She could be seen front and centre at every concert, recital, play, graduation, birthday and at any significant or insignificant celebration. She loved deeply and was deeply loved.
Mom will be greatly missed by her son, Tony (Alayna Edgett), daughters, Vicki (Todd Beaver) and Colleen (Rick Davis), all of HRM, as well as her grandchildren Joshua, Alex, Andrea, Matthew, Lindsey, Rebecca, Courtney, Andrew, Erin, Jacob, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Mom was a shining example of what family truly is.
Betty is also survived by her sisters Carol Martell (Bedford) and Ann Campbell (Port Hawkesbury), and brothers-in-law Edward Martell (Bedford), Glen Kerr (Bedford), and Carl Dorey (Bedford). Betty was also predeceased by sisters Jean Patterson, Claire Dorey, and Mary-Lou Kerr, brothers-in-law Hugh Patterson and Cyril Campbell, and beloved niece Janice Patterson-Williams.
