It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of Margaret Ellen (Dargie) Kidd, 80, on March 6th, 2023. Ellen passed away in the VG Palliative Care Unit, surrounded by her three daughters, and her daughter-of-the-heart, Marsha Kaiser.
Ellen was born in Annapolis Royal, NS, and grew up in nearby Round Hill. As a young military spouse (David C. Latter, deceased 1983), she lived in Montreal, BC and NB, before returning to Halifax. Ellen raised four children before returning to the workforce. She met her beloved husband, Richard Kidd, in 1987, and married in 1990. She retired from Parks Canada to join Richard in decades of happy retirement.
Ellen and Richard were side-by-side companions from the day they met. They complemented each other as avid readers, lovers of dining and movie theatre visits, and wonderful parents and grandparents. Ellen was a master knitter, and as she sat with Richard enjoying him cheering on the Patriots and Blue Jays for many years, she prolifically created hats, headbands, and mittens which she donated annually to Phoenix Youth Shelter and children’s charities. Hundreds of people have had warm heads and hands in “creations by Ellen”, which warmed her heart in turn.
Ellen was blessed with many wonderful friends, who joined her in joyous times throughout the years, as well as provided immense love and support throughout her battle with cancer, and the loss of her husband on March 22, 2022. Her family is immeasurably grateful to them.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard, her son, Gilbert, and parents E. Alexander and Ada Dargie. Ellen is survived by her three daughters, Jacqueline Latter, Monette (Robert) Downing and Valerie Leonard, her sister, Carole Melanson-Chapman, grandchildren Dylan Leonard, Mackenzie (Jarrett) Smith, Maryn Smith, nieces Mandy (Steven) Jazic, Paige Melanson, Maren (Nick) Melanson and nephew Ryan McDow. Ellen treasured being Nana to Kayleigh, Lisa, Ella and Emma.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, April 11th at 10 a.m. at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Interment will take place in July at Round Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Feed Nova Scotia, or others in need.
