Garvie was a true gentleman. He cherished all his dear friends including his lifelong Hammonds Plains brothers & buddies, his morning coffee shop friends, his camp & “fishing” friends and more. Garvie liked to travel the Maritimes, forged many friendships and knew people wherever he went. He had a gift for making you feel part of the family within minutes of meeting him. He never forgot a face or their story.
He was predeceased by his parents Earl Haverstock and Weilder (Romans). He is survived by his life partner Lynn Durling and former wife & friend Yvonne Haverstock, their three loving children, Ian (Bev), Jill (Alec) and Holly (Steve), grandson Jamie (Ian), Chapman-Chittick girls Brittany & Liah, Durling boys Jason (Sabina), Jeff (Marsha), John, and many dear nieces and nephews. He has two loving sisters Ida Boutilier (Donald) and Viola Mason (Gordon) and brother, Dennis Haverstock (Carol).
He owned and operated Haverstock Boxes and Crates Ltd. sawmill in Hammonds Plains which had been in his family for generations. They milled local wood and made wooden barrels, boxes and crates for the local fishing and agricultural industries. He enjoyed working with the DOT and exhibition grounds. In his retirement, he was an honorary motorsport shop foreman. He was dedicated to his home community of Hammonds Plains, from volunteering at the fire department in his earlier years, to spending time & sharing stories with the Hammonds Plains Historical Society. He will be greatly missed.
Visitation will take place at JA Snow’s Funeral Home 339 Lacewood Dr, Halifax, Friday April 27th, 5-8pm. Funeral Service at JA Snow’s Funeral Home Sat April 28th at 10am, with reception to follow. Private burial at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be to a local “Meals on Wheels” or the Hammonds Plains Historical Society.
