ALLEN, Kathryn Diane, 62, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, on July 17, 2014 after a courageous struggle with cancer. She was the daughter of the late Ainsley Allen, and Carolyn (MacNeil) Allen. She is survived by her mother Carolyn Allen, sister Susan (Gerard) MacKinnon, brothers Brian (Elaine) Allen, Larry (Valerie) Allen, nieces and nephews, Matthew (Leila) Allen, Jordan (Beth) Allen, Elizabeth MacKinnon, Susannah MacKinnon, Lauren Marchand, Jesse Allen, Molly Allen, uncles, Winston (Julia) Allen, Kenneth (Beth) MacNeil, Gordon (Georgia) MacNeil, Rodney Fisk and numerous cousins.
Kathryn had a wonderful nursing career and was known for her dedication to her profession. She graduated from the VG School of Nursing in 1973; received her BN from Dalhousie University in 1982 and then went on to attain a MSc (N) from the University of Toronto in 1992. She spent many years as a staff nurse at the VG Hospital and from 1982-1989 was the Nurse Manager Gynecology/Oncology. She worked as a Clinical Nurse specialist from 1992-1995 and as a Program Manager of Palliative Care 1995-2000 at the VG. Kathryn was a Clinical Nurse Educator at the Sheikh Khalifa Medical Center, Abu Dhabi, UAE from 2000-2004. She returned to Halifax where she worked as a Clinical Nursing Instructor at the Dalhousie School of Nursing, 2005-2006. Kathryn took on the role of Nurse Educator with the RN Professional Development Center in developing programs for Internationally Educated Health Care Professionals from 2006 until her illness.
Kathryn served as a Board member with CRNNS; was on the national board of CANO (Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology) and served in the Palliative Care Association of NS. She was part of the group to initiate the Look Good Feel Better program in 1993 in Halifax.
The family wish to express appreciation and thanks to all the Health Care Professionals involved in Kathryn’s care. A special thanks to Dr. Molinari, Dr. Colwell. Dr. Marsh, Dr. Horton, Dr. Dempster, nurses Jill Mason and Glenna Thornhill, the 7A Palliative Care team, and all the dedicated nurses of the Chemo Unit on 11th floor VG. As well, we wish to acknowledge the wonderful support of her colleagues at the RNPDC.
Kathryn was a compassionate and caring individual who sought to put others before herself. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow’s Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax on Friday, July 25, 2014, 2-4 and 6-8 pm.
The memorial service will be held at Grace Chapel, 255 Ross St. (corner of Ross & Farnham Gate), Halifax on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 1:00 pm, with Pastor Mark Harris officiating. A reception will immediately follow with a private family burial to take place at a later date.
