Passed peacefully at Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home, Halifax. Born in Whitehead, she was the daughter of the late Amelia (Brokredy) and Huntley Hendsbee. She is survived by her partner Paul Fraser, daughters Gwen (James) Halifax and Gail (Chris) Red Deer, Alberta and sons Michael (Vicki) Elmsdale and Ian (Jill) Virginia, grandsons Corwin, James and Marcus, brother Bruce (Betty) Florida and sister-in-law Ruby. Besides her parents she was predeceased by husband James, son Robert (Bobby), brothers Keith and Wayne, sister Judy, sister-in-laws Marion and Joanne, niece Charlene and nephew Kevin.
Joyce married young and spent her early years raising her children. She then moved to Halifax to attend Dalhousie University where she earned her BA and Masters in Sociology.
Upon completing university, Joyce followed her passion of empowering women, first with Bryony House and then with several government positions researching women’s issues including indigenous women and women in rural Nova Scotia. Joyce then went on to teach Sociology and Woman Studies at Mount Saint Vincent and Saint Mary’s University. She was Vice-President of the Union for part time lecturers while employed at Saint Mary’s.
In her later years she and her partner Paul renovated the family home and ran Queensport House bed and breakfast. When she wasn’t serving and chatting with guests she enjoyed spending time at the beach and hosting family gatherings and winter vacations in Mexico.
Joyce’s door was open to anyone in need. Her home was the hub of family and she will be dearly missed.
Many thanks to Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home for the excellent care she received.
Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.
Celebration of Joyce’s life to be announced.
