It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the Rev. Canon John C. Smith at the age of 87, on January 22, 2020, in Halifax. Born at Wirral, New Brunswick, the son of John and Annie (Hoyt). He is survived by sons, Michael (Edie) of Calgary and Andrew (Bonnie) of Halifax, and grandsons Dustin, Johnathan and Adam, sister Dorothy Corkum (late Howard) of Stoneham, MA, and his partner Greg Scott of Halifax. He was predeceased by his spouse Alison Evans.
As a graduate of UNB and Harvard he was associated with the mineral industry for over thirty years. He was ordained a priest in the Anglican Church of Canada and served in the Parishes of Port Dufferin and St. Mark’s Halifax. John always believed in continued learning and personal improvement and graduated with a Master of Divinity in 2015 from Atlantic School of Theology at the age of 84.
With a varied career in New Brunswick he was Chief Geologist, Assistant Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, President of NB Coal Ltd., Chairman, Grand Lake Development Corporation, Chair of the St. John River Basin Board and a partner in the consulting firm of Resource Associates Ltd. In 1973 he accepted the position as Deputy Minister of Mines of Nova Scotia and was Chair of the Nova Scotia Energy Council. Subsequently he became President of Novaco Ltd. and lived in Sydney. He was a Life Member of the Mining Association and the recipient of several awards for contributions to the mineral industry. He was a member of the Liberal Party of Canada.
After retiring in 1997, he undertook interim ministries in St. James, Armdale, Ecum Secum, Bible Hill, Pictou, Hubbards and Newport-Walton. For several years, he was Executive Secretary of Diocesan Synod, Executive Assistant to the Bishop, and Acting Director of Administration and Finance. He was a member of the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Halifax and served as an Honorary Canon.
He was a volunteer at the Nova Scotia AIDS Coalition, a friend of Bill with many Bill friends, as well as a member of the NSPEI Chapter of Integrity and supported Safe Harbour Metropolitan Community Church.
Part of his ongoing learning and constant curiosity for everything life had to offer was a joy of travelling. John and Greg were perfect travel partners and were always open to leave the ‘beaten path’ to explore what nature had to offer. No trip was complete without having driven on a “dirt road’. They both took great pleasure in noticing the simple things in life.
The family would like to thank the staff of 3-IMCU, 5.2 ICU and Palliative Care at the QEII Health Sciences Centre for the wonderful care John received.
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 26, 2-5pm, Cathedral Church of All Saints, 1330 Cathedral Lane, Halifax. Funeral service will be held Monday, January 27, 2pm, Cathedral Church of All Saints.
Interment at a later date in the Smith family plot at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Nerepis, NB.
