Born in Montreal, John was employed by CIL Inc. and its successor company, Brenntag Canada, retiring in 2001 as District Manager. He served on the Halifax District School Board, the Halifax Industrial Commission and the board of directors for Bonny Lea Farm.
He was also past president of the Charitable Irish Society of Halifax, a long-time member of An Cumann (the Irish Society of Nova Scotia) and a volunteer with the Holy Cross cemetery restoration project.
John was a faithful parishioner for many years at Saint Benedict in Halifax and St. Anthony’s in Hubbards.
He was predeceased by his wife, Grace. Together, John and Grace spent many happy summers at their beloved cottage in Hubbards.
Surviving John are his brother Joseph Riley (June) of Bracebridge, Ontario; his sister Marie Riley of Halifax; and many nieces and nephews in both Nova Scotia and Ontario.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. A Holy Mass will be offered in memory of John at 12:15 p.m., November 15, 2022 in Saint Benedict Church, 45 Radcliff Drive, Halifax. A private interment will take place in St. James’ cemetery, Antigonish, where John will rest beside Grace.
John’s family wishes to thank the staff at The Berkeley (Gladstone) for their care and compassion in the final years of John’s life.
