

John “Jack” Edmund O’Leary; born in Pictou, NS in 1922, son of Sylvester B. O’Leary and Jane MacDonald, passed away on October 1, 2014 at Camp Hill Veteran’s Hospital. Educated in the Pictou school system and served in the RCAF in NFLD, England and Europe from 1942-1946. Joined the NS Department of Health in 1946 as a Public Health Inspector. Reenlisted in the RCAF in 1952 and served in various Command Headquarters in Canada and France. Retired in 1974 and joined Health and Welfare Canada, Medical Services Branch as an Environmental Health Officer. Upon retiring in 1989, he was Senior Environmental Health Officer for the Atlantic Region. He was a licensed umpire for softball, an avid golfer, bowler and played in the men’s and mixed curling leagues. He loved his Yankees, Montreal Canadians, and Alouettes. Jack was a member of the Vimy Legion, Knights of Columbus, and parish council member Our Lady of Fatima and St. Thomas More Parish, as well as a Lay Minister at all parishes he attended.
Married to the former Genevieve Duprey and had 9 children. In 1997 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Survived by his sons, Kevin (Beth Woodworth), Alan (Meg Morash), Joseph; daughters, Colleen (Jim Petrin), Jacki (Roy Hercun), Jane (Paul Little) Maureen (Dennis Walsh), Joan, Gerri; sister, Margaret Gingras (O’Leary); 16 grandchildren and 9 great- grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by wife, Genevieve “Mike”; brothers, Gregory, Cyril; sisters, Marjorie Bijeau, Mary Dubé, Joan Arsenault.
Visitation will be held in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax (902-455-0531) on Sunday, October 5 from 2-4 pm. A Funeral Service will take place in Saint John XXIII Parish on Monday, October 6, at 10 am. Interment at a later date in Stella Maris Cemetery, Pictou. Family flowers only.
