It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our eternally loved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Determined and courageous to the end, Joan passed away peacefully in QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax on September 25, 2010 with family at her side after a six year battle with (Multiple Myeloma) cancer.
Born in Little Bras d’Or, Cape Breton, Joan (NEE McKinnon) graduated from St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in North Sydney. After graduating she took a position at the Halifax Infirmary. Joan resided, married and raised her family for the past 45 years in Halifax. When she left nursing to work with her husband, Joan stayed in contact with the medical profession through her volunteer work on the boards of the Camp Hill Medical Centre, Halifax Infirmary, NSHO, VON (N.S.) and Victoria Hall. Joan also worked for Canadian Pensioners Concern, on an Elder Abuse Project. She co-authored the book, ‘Battered and Betrayed.’
Joan enjoyed many activities; Skiing in Wentworth, Golfing at Ashburn, Walking, Traveling, Playing bridge, CWL member, cross word puzzles and as an avid reader she had a great interest in her book club. She enjoyed music especially anything Celtic.
Joan’s main interest was her family – her children and grandchildren brought her the greatest joy.
Joan is survived by her husband, William (Bill) of 44 years, Daughter, Angela (Erik) Koppernaes, Son, David (Christina) Pace, grandchildren Meghan, Adam, Hannah and Victoria, all of Halifax, Brother David (Jeannine) McKinnon, Sisters, Pauline (David) Fowlie, Marlene McKinnon, Theresa (Danny) MacCormack all of Halifax/Dartmouth area, Marie (Bill) Mann, Oakville, Ontario and Ann (LeRoy) Hawkins, Sydney Mines, and many adoring nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her Mother Mary McNeil and father Bill McKinnon.
Visitation will be held at Snows Funeral Home on Lacewood Dr., Halifax, Thursday September 30, 6 – 9 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Dunbrack St., Halifax on Friday October 1, 10:30 am, with Fr. James Mallon officiating. Reception following. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Benedict Church or a charitable organization of your choice. Interment will be in Joan’s “little piece of paradise” in Wallace, NS at a future date.
