Joan was a Veteran, a member of the Women Canadian Army Corps (WCAC) as a Transportation Technologist in the 36 Service Battalion Halifax in the early 1960’s. Joan was a loving mother who placed her children and family ahead of all else. Joan and Bill moved to her ancestral home in L’Ardoise, Cape Breton after Bill retired in 1979. She was an avid reader, loved playing cards of all sorts especially Crib. She loved watching the Young and the Restless, always trying to ‘second guess’ Victor. She loved to sing especially to children. She always had a song in her heart especially being asked to sing the “French song” at many parties by Bill.
She had a great sense of humour. She loved to crochet and knit and embroidered many beautiful pillow cases and growing her vegetable garden. She was a fabulous cook with many who ate at her table asking for her recipes. She could do anything she put her mind to; whether from instructions in a book, or by looking at something and just making it. She was a member of Holy Guardian Angel Parish, a woman of deep faith and wisdom, praying the rosary and chaplet of Divine Mercy. She was a proud member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 110, L’Ardoise NS.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of JA Snow Funeral Home. A Memorial Mass of a life well lived, will take place at Holy Guardian Angel Church, L’Ardoise with burial to follow, at a time to be later announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Richmond Villa, QEII Veterans Memorial Wing, the Canadian Lung Association, the Canadian Cancer Society, CNIB or another charity in Joan’s name.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Richmond Villa for the care, love and support of our mother over the years. We also wish to thank the staff at St Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney and the Emergency staff at Strait Richmond Hospital, and then especially, her final days that were spent in the gentle, loving care of the staff on 4 East, Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Wing, QEII.
