McKeage, James John – 81, Halifax, passed away July 28, 2010 with family by his side. Born December 17, 1928, Montreal, Que., he was the child of the late Leland and Mae (LeBlanc) McKeage. “JJ” lived a truly remarkable life. He really did! Dad treasured time with his friends, he enjoyed a successful 42 year career in public relations, but most of all he loved and was proud of his family. Dad was a graduate of Loyola College in Montreal. He started his career in Montreal with Public Industrial Relations (P.I.R). He set up the first national PR consulting firm in Atlantic Canada. Dad was one of the first Atlantic regional PR Practitioners to receive professional accreditation in 1969. He served as president of the Atlantic PR Society (now CPRS NS) from 1960-62. Dad also worked for Moosehead Breweries. He started his own agency called J.J. McKeage & Associates in 1970. Dad was a mentor for many aspiring PR practitioners. He was also an active volunteer in the community serving on many boards including the IWK Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, Junior Achievement and the national and provincial Alzheimer Society. Dad also co-founded Team Valentine, a support group for cardiac patients. We’re so proud of Dad. A real charmer, Dad’s eyes actually sparkled when he smiled. He was never good at board games. He had an excellent sense of humour. He made great Saturday afternoon hors d'œuvres and Boxing Day turkey sandwiches...and he was renowned for his tourtiere pies. He always loved a good promotion and presentation was everything. We’ll miss Dad but know he will live on through our rich memories and the many life lessons he taught us. His children: Mike, John, Sue and Dave; in-laws: Lynne, Maureen and Paul Harper; Grandchildren: Christina, Matthew, Micah, Kelly, Christian and Charlotte. Dad was predeceased by our mom, Maybelle. A Wake will be held at Snow’s Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Monday, August 2, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, August 3 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Agnes Church, 6903 Mumford Road, Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a camp founded by Dave called the Brigadoon Children’s Camp Society. It’s a camp for children living with chronic illness and their families. Dad was so proud of Dave’s work. To make a donation, please phone: (902) 422-3387. E-mail condolences may be sent to www.jasnowfuneralhome.com.
