The family of James (Jim) MacDonald are saddened to announce his passing on Friday, November 9, 2018, in the palliative care unit of the QE II Health Services Centre at the age of 76. Born in Antigonish, he was the son of the late Archie and Johanna (Bray) MacDonald of Lower Glencoe, Guysborough County.
Jim began his career with the Bank of Nova Scotia in the mid-1960s becoming a Branch Manager in the late 1970s. In 1979, he left the Bank and joined the Provincial Department of Justice as the Court Supervisor with the Nova Scotia Supreme Court, and the Provincial Courts in Bedford and Halifax retiring from Head Office in 2009. Jim served as a Justice of the Peace and the clerk of Small Claims Court.
Jim was very active in his church, Saint Mother Teresa of Kolkata (formerly Saint Stephen's) serving on the Parish Council, Finance Committee, Msgr. Leo Murphy Scholarship Fund Committee. He also served his church as a Eucharistic Minister, reader and counter.
Jim loved playing cards, fishing, riding his ATV and taking Cole, Tigger, and Cookie for walks. Jim enjoyed having lobster with family and friends and going for coffee at Tim Hortons with the guys.
Jim will be deeply missed by his wife, Marlene of Halifax, and his sons, Neil (Tanya) Halifax; Sandy (Stellarton); and Terrence (Dayna), Calgary; and beloved grandchildren, Charlotte, Stephen (Halifax), and Cameron and Madison (Calgary). He is also survived by sisters, Mary Sadie (late John) MacDonald, Anne (Johnny) Landry, Martha (late Charles) McDonald, Helen (Henry) Delory and Mary Anne (Brian) Flemming and brothers, Duncan (late Darlene) MacDonald, Dan (Jean) MacDonald, Eddie MacDonald and Roddie MacDonald as well as many nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by his parents, Archie and Johanna MacDonald; his uncle, Angus MacDonald, and his parents in-law, Neil and Florence MacDonald.
Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at both the Palliative Care Unit at the Victoria General site and at Emergency at the Infirmary site of the QE II Health Services Centre. Extra special thanks to Jim's close friends Bill and Muriel Hale, Phil and Irene Beeler, Bobby Hayter and Charlie Walsh who provided unending support throughout Jim's illness.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 and from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at J.A. Snow Funeral Home at 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2018, at 11:00 am at Saint Mother Teresa of Kolkata Church, 6032 Normandy Dr., Halifax with Father Timothy MacDonald, S.A. officiating. Burial to take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery at a later date.
As Jim suffered from Lymphoma and Myeloma, blood donations may be made in his memory to Canada Blood Services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the QE II Health Services Foundation, Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, or the Terry Fox Foundation.
