James (Jim) grew up in Paisley, Scotland helping his father John with the family building contractor business. The watchful eyes of his mother Martha and two older sisters Margaret and Agnes made sure that young Jimmy never got into too much mischief.
He joined the Royal Corps of Signals of the British Army in early 1945 and was assigned to the Royal Highlanders (Black Watch). He served in Germany, Italy and then in the former Yugoslavia during post war occupation.
Returning to Scotland after his military service, Jim enrolled at the Royal Technical College (now Strathclyde University) studying engineering. He and his best pal Peter Martin went to many dances at Jordanhill Teachers College where he met the love of his life, Helen Fairlie.
Jim and Helen were married in December 1955. They were blessed with two sons, John and Russell. After a decade of working in both Scotland and England Jim and Helen made the decision to immigrate to Canada for new opportunities for themselves and the boys. Jim joined the Agricultural College in Olds Alberta as an agricultural engineer in 1967. However, the call of the ocean soon had the family travel across Canada to Nova Scotia where Jim joined the faculty of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro in 1969. He retired as head of the Engineering Department after over 20 years of service.
Jim and Helen enjoyed their retirement years with their beloved little dog Ruby in Chester and Chester Basin. Jim, unable to resist his engineering ways in retirement, occupied his time renovating and building several homes by the seashore.
Jim is survived by Helen (Fairlie), his dear loving wife of over 66 years, his sons, John, wife Susan Liu, grandson James; son Russell, wife Mary Jane (MacIsaac), granddaughter Meagan; nephew Ian Duncan, wife Anne, Ken Crilly, husband of the late Joan Crilly (Jim’s niece) and many grand nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents John and Martha Adams, sisters Margaret and Agnes, and niece Joan Crilly.
The family thanks the wonderful staff at Parkland at the Gardens for their tender care of Jimmy.
Cremation has taken place. Internment will be in Scotland at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choosing. To leave an online condolence please visit www.cruikshankshalifaxfuneralhome.com.
