It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, J. Colin Cameron on July 12, 2020 at age 72. Born in New Glasgow, he was the eldest son of the late James Malcolm and Lillas Jean (Sutherland) Cameron.
Colin is survived by his cherished wife of 49 years, Barbara (Titus) Cameron; his son Jeffrey (Jennifer Nield) and their children Titus and Scarlett; and his daughter Heather (Matthew) Holland and their children Amelia and Elizabeth; all of Bedford. He was an adored Grampie and “GG” to his four wonderful grandchildren who will miss him immensely. He is also survived by his sisters Mary (Grant) Mitton and Jane (David) Roberts; his brother Don (Debbie); and many nieces and nephews.
Colin attended Mount Allison University, where he and Barbara were serendipitously matched up by a computer questionnaire for a school dance in November 1967. He graduated with his BSc in 1970 and worked for the Department of Environment in Fredericton. He moved to Halifax to pursue his accounting degree and obtained his CA designation in 1977. He began his accounting career with Riddell Stead (later Thorne Riddell) and then joined Hemming and Company. In 1989, Colin joined White Burgess Langille Inman (now MNP) and retired as a tax partner in 2003.
After retiring, Colin and Barbara enjoyed travelling to many countries and took cruises all over the world. They spent many winters at Sunbow Bay on Anna Maria Island in Florida with special visits from Heather and her family during March Break. Colin spent many happy summers gardening by the ocean at the family cottage in Pictou County.
Colin was a dedicated volunteer, coaching his children in Nova Scotia Minor Hockey and Nova Scotia Ringette, and served as President of the NS Chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society. He was instrumental in the building of The Lodge That Gives for cancer patients required to travel to Halifax for treatment. Colin was named Volunteer of the Year in 1992 and received an Honorary Life Membership from the Canadian Cancer Society in 1996.
Colin loved sports, and was a lifelong fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the New England Patriots and the Toronto Blue Jays. He never missed the chance to catch a game, whether in his favorite armchair at home, or going to New York to take in a Jets vs. Pats game with Jeff. Politics was another passion, and he worked on several provincial and federal campaigns over the years. He and his golf buddies spent many hours on the links telling tall tales and taking mulligans, and he loved to tell a corny “dad” joke or play a prank on the kids. He took great pride in his children and their spouses and their many accomplishments, and always provided sound advice and support to them.
We thank our wonderful family and friends for their love and support over the last year, whether a kind note, a drive to the hospital, or a homecooked meal. We wish to thank the Hematology Unit at the VG, in particular Dr. Mary Margaret Keating, Heather Veitch and the caring staff of the MDU on the 4th floor, as well as the VON program, for their support during Colin’s battle with leukemia.
A celebration of Colin’s life will be held at a later date due to current travel restrictions. Cremation has taken place under the direction of J.A. Snow Funeral Home in Halifax. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. Online condolences may be left at: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com.
