Born in Fisherman’s Harbour and raised in Port Bickerton, NS, Hilda was the oldest daughter of the late Rhoda (nee Horton) and Asa Harpell. She was confidently and beautifully independent, loving, generous, and kind. Her smile and laugh lit up her face and will always be remembered. She met her husband and lifelong love, Cliff, in Halifax, where together they established a warm and welcoming home and family haven. Hilda would amusedly say that she loved her shoes and handbags; those close to her would say she loved all things fashion.
Hilda started her career at MT&T in Halifax, soon moving to the Finance department at Halifax City Hall, from where she ultimately retired. She was a faithful and active member of Saint Matthias Anglican Church, and more recently St Peter’s Anglican Church.
She was fiercely protective of her family and took great pride in being the family matriarch upon the passing of her mom. Hilda was the first of her many brothers and sisters to move to Halifax, where she and Cliff opened their home to her siblings who followed her. Their cottage on the St Mary’s River was the family gathering place for singalongs, meals, and camaraderie for many years, including the inaugural Harpell Family Reunion in 1987, which has continued every 5 years since.
Hilda is survived by Sisters Florence Baker, Marjorie (Grant) Yake, Carol Whitmore, Wanetta (Roger) Evans, Sandra (Len) Archibald, Barbara (David) Croft, Judy (Gordie) MacDonald, Cindy (Lloyd) MacGrath; Brothers Charles (Liz), Isaac (Sherry), John (Louise); Sisters-in-Law Janice Harpell, Mickey Harpell, Lottie Harpell, Sandra Harpell, Jesse Dimock, Dorothy Sherman, Juliette Fass; and many nieces, nephews, and their families.
Hilda was predeceased by her husband Clifford; Brothers Stanley, twins Hector & Harold (in infancy), Clayton, Douglas, Jerry, and Asa Jr.; Brothers-in-Law, Melvin Baker, Ian Sherman, John Whitmore, Douglas Sherman, Sisters-In-Law Anne Harpell, Jean Garland, Norma Peters.
