It is with great sadness we announce the death of Helen Aileen (McGinn) Harvey of Halifax, on July 2, 2022 at 95 years of age. Born in Halifax on December 17, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Charles Joseph and Jessie (Stokes) McGinn.
Helen was married to the late Raymond (“Ray”) Harvey a local hotel manager and sports enthusiast who created cartoon illustrations. She was widowed in 1975.
Helen was a graduate of Mount Saint Vincent Academy. Her career was launched with National Drugs, followed by over 25 years in the accounting department of the Halifax Herald. After retiring in 1987, she used her skills as a book keeper volunteering at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church and for the Ladies Auxiliary of St. Vincent’s Guest Home for many years.
Helen and her sister Rose were not only siblings, they were best friends & inseparable – they travelled the globe from Bermuda to Europe and several road trips in Canada.
Helen enjoyed needlework, knitting, crocheting and in her retirement, registered in several adult learning classes. These classes awakened a natural gift of understanding colour and started a lifelong enjoyment of painting florals and local scenes using acrylic and oils. Family members have delighted in gifts of her special works, and her artwork was proudly displayed in her retirement residence. “Aunt Helen mitts” were a treasured gift sought after for little hands to keep warm during winter months.
Helen is survived by her sister-in-law Fay McGinn, Hantsport. “Aunt Helen” will be fondly remembered by her 10 beloved nieces and nephews, 23 grand nieces and nephews, 11 great grand nieces and nephews; as well as several cousins and close friends. Besides her husband and parents, Helen was predeceased by her much loved sister Rose and her brothers Charles (Madeline), Eugene and Joseph and nephews Peter, John and Paul.
The family would like to thank the Parkland at the Gardens staff who has provided loving and professional care over the past 6 years. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to a charity of your choice.
A private family funeral mass will be held on 2:00pm on Friday July 8 at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church Halifax. It is hoped to be live streamed on their YouTube channel. For details visit www.cruikshankhalifaxfuneralhome.com. Burial following mass will be at Mount Olivet cemetery.
