It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Fred Farmer, on June 2, 2024 in his 86th year. Fred is survived by his four children Kathi, Paula (Michel), Leean (Dave) and Mark (Christine), six grandchildren Shannon (Marius), Veronica, Kyle (Rebecca), Julia (Dave), Sam and Daniel, brothers Rick (Gloria) and Robert (Ann-Marie) and sister, Judie Reddy. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Donna (née Brophy), brothers Bud, Barry and Walter, and his parents George and Lillian Farmer.
Fred was a professional engineer, a lifelong do-it-yourselfer who could build or repair anything, a devoted family man, avid curler and fly fisherman extraordinaire. He enjoyed family time at the bungalow on the Mira River in Cape Breton. Later, he and Donna travelled extensively across Canada, and toured Australia and the United States. He worked as an electrical engineer at the International Nickel Company (INCO), Nova Scotia Power and Neill & Gunter. Fred was especially proud of his Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia (May 1967).
Our family thanks Mary Smith and the amazing staff at the Berkeley Gladstone where dad lived for the last five years; everyone there was truly wonderful to him. Our thanks also go out to Dr. Mallery of the Palliative and Therapeutic Harmonization Clinic, Camp Hill Hospital for her care and guidance in dad's final weeks.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life gathering will be held Friday, June 14 from 2-4 p.m. at the J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Feed Nova Scotia (feednovascotia.ca) Fred’s favourite charity.
