McBeath (Matheson), Elspeth Ross (Joey) - of Halifax, passed away after a brief illness on December 5th 2010 at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital. Born in Northern Scotland on November 11 1921 and raised in Caster and Donalda Alberta, she was the daughter of Edward and Margaret Matheson. Elspeth joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 when the women’s division was first formed. She served her country proudly until the end of WWII in 1945. While serving she met and married her husband John David McBeath, who was serving with the Canadian Navy, and together they had one daughter Karen Muriel McBeath. Elspeth spent the next 60 years being the devoted wife and mother to Jack and Karen and together they made a very close and loving family. Some of Joey’s fondest memories were of spending summers at their cottage in Cape Brule ( Shediac) New Brunswick and winters in St. Petersburg Florida. They had many lasting friends in both these places and frequently spoke fondly of all these people. Sadly both Jack and Karen passed away this past year, this was very hard for Elspeth, but being the very proud and strong women she was she persevered and continued to be active socially with her many friends. She even made a trip out west to visit with her many relatives in Alberta. Elspeth is one of twelve children and is survived by nine siblings in Alberta and British Columbia. Margaret (Meg) Hunter (Bob), Mary Rake (Palmer), Edna Grant (Bob), William Matheson (Mary), Ed Matheson (Jean), Janet Matheson, James (Jim) Matheson (Ida), Ruth Matheson, John (Johnny Baker) Matheson. She was pre diseased by 2 siblings, James Matheson and Bessie Gibson. Also predeceased by her husband John David (Jack) McBeath and cherished daughter Karen Muriel McBeath.
Isn’t it strange that princes and kings and clowns that caper in sawdust rings, and common people like you and me are builders for eternity. Each is given a bag of tools a shapeless mass and a book of rules, and each must make ere life has flown, a stumbling block or a stepping stone.
Visitation will be held this Wednesday, December 8th from 6-7 pm at the J.A. Snow Funeral Home on 339 Lacewood Drive in Halifax. A memorial service will be held on Thursday December 9th at 2 pm. at Drummond Hall, 65 Prestwick Close, Halifax (Parkland Estates) in the Garden Pavilion. She is to be buried along side her daughter and husband at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Moncton New Brunswick on Friday December 10th at 1 pm. Please visit www.jasnowfuneralhome.com.
