She was born in Spry Bay Nova Scotia on May 9, 1931 to Isa Maude and Frederick William Leslie. After growing up there, she moved to Halifax to continue her education and it was her home for the rest of her life.
Widowed young, raising her three daughters kept her very busy. Her career included several organizations with the longest one at Len Wilson Financial Planning, where she enjoyed the challenges of being his only assistant and where she stayed until her retirement. She was a faithful and lifelong member of Saint James Anglican Church, Armdale. Betty enjoyed many good friendships, social events and volunteer roles there including Sunday School Teacher, Mother's Union, and weekly reader organizer that all benefited people within the church, local community and abroad. It was a source of great importance and comfort in her life.
Some of the activities she enjoyed were bowling and travel. She was also a very active volunteer in the community, particularly with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia and Scouts Canada.
Her greatest pride and joy were her four grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. They brought her much joy and she was very close to them all. She was always interested in what they were doing and they all thought the world of her. She was a very social person and was always calling a relative or a friend for a chat. She was a good friend to many who cherished her in return.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd Whatley, her parents and her brother Frederick William Leslie. She is survived by her three daughters: Nancy (Colin) MacDonald, Calgary; Sandra Lynn Whatley, Halifax; and Mary Lou (Roger) Daigle, Halifax. Her grandchildren include Brett (Courtney) MacDonald, Calgary; Heather (James) Mattie, Calgary; Mitchell MacDonald, Kelowna and Josh Daigle, Halifax. She adored her two little great-granddaughters, Quinn and Sienna Mattie.
