It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father on June 10, 2019 at age 85. Dad is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Louise (St. Clair); and his four children: Darlene Levangie, Halifax; Derek, Dartmouth; Darren, Halifax; and Duane, Grand Pré. Dad is also survived by his grandchildren, Ashlee, Justin (Derek and Sherri); Maris and Jacquelyn (Darlene and Bill); Jillian and Brennan (Darren and Christine); Kenzie (Duane and Jeanne), and great- grandchildren, Callee, Brayden, Jonah and Sam; along with many nieces and nephews. Born in Halifax, to Joseph Saulnier (of Meteghan) and Frances (Aubie) (Bathurst, N.B.). Dad was predeceased by brother, Raymond Saulnier (Halifax); sister, Anita Duggan (Halifax), and sister Marie who died in infancy. Dad spent his early years serving his country in the Navy, to building a career at The Chronicle Herald rising to Manager, Circulation Department. He was a gentle and empathetic man, always lending a hand to a neighbour, a friend, his family, and the vulnerable. Dad was sincere and warm, ready to talk and listen with interest, whether old or young; everyone was equal in his eyes. He was always prepared to go where he was needed, be it to a work or family event or sharing a cup of hot chocolate with one of his paper route carriers. Whether it was through a joke, a story, or lending an ear, Dad had a way to lift your spirits. His greatest pride and joy was his family, and all the achievements each made along the way. Of course his second love was hockey, so it stands to reason his three sons, two grandsons, and his granddaughter were all successful on the ice. An amazing moment was when, he was able to watch as Jill fulfilled her Olympic dream in PyeongChang. One of his few memories of his mother, who died when he was seven, was of him bringing home an injured dog, he and his mother nursing the sick animal back to health, which turned into a lifelong love of animals. Edward/Dad, we were fortunate to be able to call you ours, and will love you forever. Under the care of J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax with visitation on Thursday, June 13th between 6-8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held in Saint Benedict Roman Catholic Church, 45 Radcliffe Dr., Halifax at 10:30 am on Friday, June 14th. Reception to follow. Because of Dad's great compassion for animals and the vulnerable, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nova Scotia SPCA and Hope Cottage.
