Mom will be lovingly remembered by her children, Marilyn Byce, Herring Cove, Bernard (Nora Robicheau), Kentville, Peggy (Paul) Amyotte, Dartmouth, Christine Young (John Hibsman), Yarmouth, Robert (Ann), Hammonds Plains. She will be fondly remembered as Granny by 12 grandchildren and GG by 6 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Harold Matthew, her youngest son, David (Mary Ellen), her cherished grandson Matthew Amyotte, her parents, William and A. Mildred Anderson, as well as siblings, Ronald, Carol, Laurine, Shirley, June and Evelyn. She had a special relationship with her sister June.
Edie was born on June 7, 1934 and moved to Herring Cove as a child. After completing early education she took pride in attending Halifax Regional Vocational School where she made life-long friends. Her business training opened many doors to employment including Nova Scotia Power Corporation and the Atlantic Jewish Council.
She became an active member of her community and the parish of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Herring Cove, where she enjoyed teaching First Communion for over 20 years. A consummate volunteer, Mom became the first President of the Halifax Fire Fighters Ladies Auxiliary, raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. She was a 10-year participant in the Walk for ALS (Walk Strong) after losing Dad and David to the disease.
We were proud of her tenacious spirit as she embarked on international and cross-Canada trips with Dad for Scouting jamborees and learned to play the fiddle in her mid 60s. She thoroughly enjoyed her weekend fiddle jams and playing among the best.
Mom’s favourite hobby was sewing, which she developed into a love of quilting with her fellow quilters at St. Andrew’s Community Centre. She completed her final project, a memory quilt, this spring. Mom and Dad enjoyed over 25 years of square dancing, attending dances locally and internationally. Mom made many of her costumes, as she was a self-taught seamstress willing to tackle any family sewing project. Her talents will be missed.
Visiting hours will be on June 6 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm, at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Bedford on June 7 at 11 am. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
Donations in her memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or ALS Society of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
