Dr. Nadine MacIntosh died at Halifax, Nova Scotia on Thursday September 26th, 2019. She was born on January 15th, 1922 in Darmstadt, Germany, and spent much of her youth in London, England and Berlin. She was predeceased by her parents Nadine (Exten) and Vladimir Chatelain, as well as her half-sister, Masha Jaksic.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Donald MacIntosh, and by her three daughters, Nadia Mary (Max) Gold, Catherine Anne MacIntosh and Elizabeth Viola (Frank) MacKinnon; three grandchildren, Heather Elizabeth (Mark Ruggle) MacKinnon, Nadia (Joshua Cairns) MacKinnon and Graeme Alexander MacKinnon; her niece Svetlana (David) Watkins and nephew Dusan (Debbie) Jaksic and several grandnephews.
Nadine graduated with a BSC in 1941 and MD in 1945 from the University of Berlin. After an Internship at Berlin University Clinic in Neurology and Surgery at a Bremen Hospital, Nadine joined the British Red Cross and worked in Displaced Persons Camps and at a Red Cross Hospital in Germany. She continued her medical studies for one year in London, England and worked at a Tuberculosis Sanatorium for a further two years in Kent, England. In 1951 she crossed the Atlantic and pursued post graduate studies at the Trudeau Sanatorium in Saranac Lake, New York. There she met her husband Donald. They moved to Montreal, Quebec and were married in 1953.
Nadine practiced at the Montreal General Hospital, The Royal Edward Chest Hospital, and taught at McGill University from 1953 to 1978. In 1978 she moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia where she continued to practice at the Victoria General Hospital specializing in Occupational Health, and teach at Dalhousie University until 1995.
Throughout her lifetime Nadine especially enjoyed the pursuits of teaching as well as community volunteering. Nadine volunteered her time with many organizations including the Soroptimists, the Future Club and the Senior College Association of Nova Scotia (SCANS).
In her leisure time, Nadine enjoyed reading, classical music and opera, gardening at her country home in Lismore, Nova Scotia, as well as spending time with her children and grandchildren. Nadine was fluent in four languages; French, English, German and Russian and enjoyed extensive world travel with her husband, Donald. Nadine was a lifelong member of the Russian Orthodox Church and was actively involved with the congregations in Montreal and Halifax.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 3, from 2- 4 and 7-9 pm in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Funeral service will be Friday, October 4, at 11:00 am in St. Antonio’s Orthodox Church, 2480 Windsor St, Halifax. Donations to St. Vladimir’s Orthodox church or the charity of your choice.
