Dorothy Jean Campbell

A nature lover, Dorothy enjoyed gardening, her trail walks with her friend Margaret, getting her first dip at her beloved St Margaret's Bay and her winter home in Dunedin, Florida. She was an avid traveller and reader and a life-long learner. She sought out any opportunity to acquire new skills, from cake decorating, to upholstering, to bricklaying! Technology fascinated her and in retirement she immersed herself in computer courses. Having an IPAD kept her connected to family and friends, to her favourite musicians and to the world.

Born in Halifax, Dorothy was the daughter of the late John Patrick Thompson and Mary Camilla (Meyer) Thompson. Educated in Halifax, she attended Mt. St. Vincent and Saint Mary's Universities, graduating Cum Laude. In 1961, Dorothy joined the Sisters of Good Shepherd in Halifax, working with troubled young women. Prior to taking her final vows, Dorothy left the cloistered Order and furthered her education at the University of North Dakota. She completed her studies in 1967 with a Doctorate of philosophy.

Eventually Dorothy joined the Dept. of Business Education at St.F.X.University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Involved in many societies and associations relating to her field, she was a much sought-after conference speaker. Dorothy was honored to be inducted into The Who's Who of Canadian Women.

It was in Antigonish, in 1969, that she met and married John A. (Shorty) Campbell, a widower and father to 9, with 4 still at home. Her life changed dramatically, assuming the role of mother and grandmother of a growing family. She and John Alex would go on to share a very memorable life together; involved in business, family life and travel, until his passing in 1993. Dorothy lived independently, travelling, spending time with her sister Annabelle and with our family, whenever she could.

In 2014, with some health issues, Dorothy was welcomed into the home of our sister, Frances and Georges in Brampton, Ontario. There she lived, under their loving care, enjoying life with their children and grandchildren, for 6 years. On retirement, they relocated to Antigonish, We wish to acknowledge Valerie Rampersad, who supported and cared for Dorothy, in Brampton, for 5 of those years, with such devotion and love.

The family would also like to express their deep appreciation to the entire staff at Green Meadows Residence for Seniors, Antigonish, for their compassion and care of Dorothy and her family over the past year.

Dorothy was well-loved and will be greatly missed by stepchildren Cal (Joan) Leng, Evelyn (Sandy) MacDonnell, Catherine Beaton, Ann (Alan) Shaver, Archie (Joanne) Campbell, John (Debbie) Campbell, Frances (Georges) Asselin, Theresa (Cyril) LeBlanc and Frances Turnbull. She leaves behind 26 much-loved grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was predeceased by step-daughter Sadie, step-son Roy Turnbull, sons-in-law Bob Barnes and Alphonse Beaton, grandson Robert Barnes and 2 great granddaughters, Carys and Annabelle Sparkle. She was predeceased by her sisters Mary, Kaye (Al), Emma (Albert), Annabelle, Cecilia (Horace) and brothers, Jack, Cyril (Hilda), and Jim (Carolyn). She was the last of her Thompson generation.

As per Dorothy's wishes cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place Friday, May 6 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Benedict R.C. Church, 45 Radcliffe Dr., Halifax, at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 7th.
