Donald is survived by his loving wife Mary(Levy), his son Steven, Quebec City, QC, his sister-in-law Gail Neatt, Halifax, NS, his brother-in-law Ken Spears, Halifax, NS and many nieces and nephews with special mention going to his god son Joseph, Bernadette, Claudette, Kathleen, Maureen, Karen, Philip, Kevin and Gregory.
He was predeceased by his brother David, his sister Joan and an infant son.
Donald and Mary resided in Herring Cove, NS and were married for over 64 years. They enjoyed dancing, travelling, skating and family was important to both of them. They enjoyed many trips around Canada and in the United States with their dear friends John and Mary Sullivan. In the winter months, Donald and Mary enjoyed travelling south where they spent time in Barbados, St. Lucia and Sanibel Island, Florida. Although the last year brought many challenges, their love and dedication for one another became stronger.
Donald worked his entire career in the electrical industry. In the early part of his career, he worked as an electrician and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers until 1970. He worked for A.D.G. Enterprises Ltd. as an estimator and then followed Howard Dwyer to Easco Electric Ltd where he worked for over 40 years. A special acknowledgement to the Easco office staff and the crew especially Jimmy Williams, Norman Sawler, Dwayne Armsworthy, Darryl Knickle and Dennis Sullivan. During his time at Easco, Donald obtained a Professional Quantity Surveyor’s designation and was a member of the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors. He was also a part-time instructor at the Technical University of Nova Scotia and sat on various boards within the electrical industry.
In his early adult life, Donald enjoyed the outdoors and camping. He loved to hunt and fish with his trusty companions Felix Saulnier and Charlie Dillman. The camping trips to Prince Edward Island with the Hubley family were some of his most cherished. In the late 60’s, Donald and Mary purchased land in East Linden, NS where they built a cottage and where for over 50 years, they spent most of their summers. Donald was an avid gardener, enjoyed the beach and loved a good lobster boil.
Donald was also a dedicated volunteer. He spent over 50 years as a minor hockey coach in the Herring Cove, Halifax and Chebucto Minor Hockey Associations. He was a regular visitor to the Quebec International Peewee Hockey Tournament which became a highlight of his year. More recently, he was a volunteer at Stella Maris Parish Twelve Baskets serving meals to the less fortunate.
Donald was a devoted parishioner of St. Paul’s Parish in Herring Cove, NS for over 60 years and more recently a parishioner of Stella Maris Parish in Spryfield, NS.
Visitation will take place at J.A Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax, NS, B3S 0E1 on Friday, July 15th, 2022 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, July 16th, 2022 from 9 to 10 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 16th, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 6 St. Michael’s Ave., Halifax, NS, B3P 1M5. Cremation has taken place. Following the Mass, burial will take place at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Herring Cove, NS.
