ALLEN, Donald Robert, C.D., 82, passed away peacefully while surrounded by family at Camp Hill Veteran's Memorial Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia on March 7, 2018. Donald was born on May 15, 1935 in Halifax, the only son of the late Arthur and Ruby (nee Allen) Allen. He is survived by Barbara (Bedley), his loving wife of 59 years, and daughter, Karen (Richard “Bee”) d’Entremont of Lower West Pubnico, Nova Scotia. He is predeceased by his infant son, David Arthur in 1961.
Don joined the Royal Canadian Regimental Airborne in 1951. He fought in Korea; served in Germany and Egypt; and when stationed in Halifax he served with The Royal Canadian Army Service Corp. His greatest honour was to protect and serve our country. He was past president of The Korea Veterans Association of Canada, Unit 45 Halifax, past president of The Royal Canadian Regiment, Nova Scotia Branch, and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
After retiring, Don worked diligently on behalf of veterans. He was instrumental in renaming a section of Jubilee Road in Halifax to Veterans Memorial Lane and he assisted in the development of the Korean War Veterans Memorial Garden, Stratford Way Park, Halifax. He volunteered at Camp Hill Veteran's Memorial Building as Coordinator of Protestant Church Services assisting veterans every Sunday morning down to the chapel. He was a participant of The Memory Project and proudly educated youth about his service to Canada. He was bestowed with the “Ambassador for Peace” medal of the Republic of Korea, a “Certificate of Recognition” from the Government of Canada, “Colonel of the Regiment Commendation” by The Royal Canadian Regiment, and The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.
Don’s family would like to thank the staff of Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Hospital, particularly on 6-East. We are forever grateful for the care and support you gave to Don during his time there.
Cremation has been entrusted to J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. No visitation. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at J.A. Snow Funeral Home on Friday, March 16th at 11 a.m with Rev. Gary Myatt officiating. Reception to follow. Private interment at Pleasant Hill Cemetery will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to Camp Hill Veteran's Memorial Garden.
