It is with our deepest love and sadness we announce that Chris Sperdakes passed away peacefully at his home on June 10, 2015. He was born in New Glasgow, NS on November 9, 1921 to the late Pota and John Sperdakes. Chris was a long standing member of St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marion (Topsy) and son, John; brothers, George, Peter, Bill, Orestus (Rusty) and Panagiotis; his sisters, Lillian (Zafiris), Helen (Critharis), brothers in law, John Hall, Steve Critharis and Bill Zafiris, and sister in law, Marion (Sperdakes) and a great nephew, Peter Sperdakes.
Chris is survived by his grandson, Christopher, his daughter in law Kay Sperdakes, great grandson, Grayson and his sister, Constance Hall, along with sisters in law, Hope Sperdakes, Toula Sperdakes and Thelma Cook, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and 2 great great nephews.
Chris was an exceptional athlete in his younger years, excelling at hockey, baseball and curling. He was an avid outdoorsman and a mainstay of the annual family fishing trips to Yankee Lake.
Chris served four years as a Sergeant in the Canadian Army (Canadian Forces) in the role of an instructor, based in New Glasgow. After the Army, Chris moved to Sydney, NS where he opened and operated The Sugar Bowl for 8 years. In 1946, Chris moved to Halifax where he and his brother, Peter and their wives, were the proud owners of the Candy Bowl on Spring Garden Road, which became a frequent stop for many families for over 25 years. He was a valued member of the Halifax Forum Commission for in excess of 25 years where he supported his community and made many life long friendships.
Chris was fortunate to retire at a very young age, and filled his time with a daily walk around the city visiting many friends along the way. Chris spent his summers at the family cottage on St. Margaret’s Bay where he enjoyed many countless hours of gardening, boating, swimming and riding his vintage bicycle.
Chris will be fondly missed for his sense of humor and determination that inspired and touched all whom knew him and loved him.
His family would like to express their deepest thanks to his loyal caregivers, Margaret, Shelley, and Sherry, along with the medical and palliative care teams, DVA and Dr. Petropolis for being there in our time of need. A special thanks to Chris’s wonderful neighbors, Neil, Lisa, Barb, Joseph and Graham, who were always there for him.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, June 14 from 2:00 – 4:00pm at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. The funeral service will be held at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church on Purcell’s Cove Road at 11:00am, Monday, June 15, 2015. Interment will follow the service at Fairview Lawn Cemetery. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church or a charity of your choice.
