Age 59, of Halifax, NS on April 7, 2014. Born in Halifax on May 31, 1954 he was the son of the late Arthur and Hazel (Dubaie) Lavery. He was a 33 year veteran of the DND fire department. Despite constant treatment failures for his cancer, Chris perservered to live life to the fullest with the time remaining and managed to enjoy several short trips including a Moncton Casino trip with his sisters, a Toronto trip for a Blue Jay game and a trip to Florida with friends. He always looked forward to the regular lunches at the Timberlea Tavern with his hockey pals and managed a few last trips to Moncton to watch their tournaments. He enjoyed gathering with friends and family and was so happy that the annual Keji trip in 2013 was modified to accommodate his limitations. In the 70s he back-packed through Europe then resumed travelling in the late 90s with his travel mate Cathy, visiting a number of countries. He could be relied upon to sample the local club sandwiches no matter what country he happened to visit. He lived most of his life in his beloved Purcell's Cove and never tired of watching the harbor activity from his deck, and later, his comfy armchair. Hockey was his passion. Over the years he coached, refereed, managed and/or played. An avid Maple Leaf fan, he never lost faith that they would again repeat their 1967 success. He was a friend to many and could be relied upon to show up with a paint brush or tool in hand when a project was underway. He cherished the time spent watching his children in the various sports that they participated in and would juggle his work schedule to ensure that he rarely missed a game. Xavier bought him joy and laughter during a time when life was most difficult. He is survived by his wife of almost 35 years Cathy (Fraser), daughter Natalie, son Jeff ( Jackie) and grandson Xavier, sisters Liz, Pamela (Fred) Baizana, Paula (Dave) Doucette, brother in law Wes Howard, nephews and neice Sophie. He was predeceased by brothers Milton and Jack and his sister Melba (Howard). Cremation has taken place under the direction of J.A. Snows. A memorial service will take place at Snows, 339 Lacewood drive, on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 11:00am. Donation may be made to the Cancer Society to help in the aid of research and treatment of bladder cancer.
