Mom passed peacefully away with her family by her side on October 31, 2021. She was 97 years old. She grew up in Bible Hill, Colchester County as the only child of Mary (Minnie) and James Sanderson. She trained as a nurse at the Montreal General Hospital in Montreal, returning to Halifax after graduation in 1947 to work at the Grace Maternity where she met our Dad, George.
They married in March, 1951 and began their 54 years together. In their initial years they were a Doctor and Nurse team in Twilingate NL. Their infant son Derek died in 1952 and Dad in 2005.
Over the years Mom was a member of several church choirs as she and Dad moved from place to place. She had a beautiful contralto voice and was soloist at St. James United in St. John’s in the 1970’s. She was a member of the UCW, United Church Women and was active into her nineties. She was a lifelong learner and completed a diploma at the Atlantic School of Theology in 1998. She was 74 years old.
Mom enjoyed volunteering, and in both Halifax and St. John’s was always part of the auxiliaries at the hospital, she served on the Board of Exon House in St. John’s, a home for handicapped children, became a Chaplin at the Detention Center in Hamilton to name just a few.
She loved her 8 grandchildren, Kathryn (John),Julia, Melissa (Matt), Adam (Jessica), Grace, Zack, Ayreal and William, and celebrated their milestones as they grew. She enjoyed seeing pictures and videos of her 7 great grandchildren, Luke, James, Lydia, Maeve, Noah, Augustus and Bowen. When dementia claimed her memories she still enjoyed hearing about her family in the moment. We love you Mom and miss you.
Her children Joan Wight (Keith), Graham (former spouse Pam) and Lesley want to thank the staff at Drummond Hall, Parkland, Clayton Park for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Mom while she lived there.
A private family service will be held at a later date to Celebrate Celeste’s life.
