She was born in Glace Bay, N.S. to Edith and Charles Burt. After graduating from Morrison High School in Glace Bay, she moved to Halifax and attended Halifax Children’s Hospital School of Nursing (class of 1951). Kay enjoyed a long career at the Halifax Children’s Hospital and the IWK.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Roy Turner; children, Suzanne Turner, Cathy (Charles) Walls, and Andrew (Heather) Turner;; grandchildren, Matthew, Hilary, Jaclynn, Jeffrey and Benjamin; great grandchildren Madeline and Angus; sisters Ada (Clarence) Pinsent and Nancy (Lloyd) MacLeod, as well as many nieces, nephews, close friends and neighbours. She was predeceased by her parents, as well as brothers Charles and Murray Burt.
Kay was caring, compassionate, honest and kind. Her laugh was infectious, and her sense of humor was second to none. She enjoyed the simple things in life, especially spending time at the cottage, having large family dinners, making cookies, playing cards, bird watching, knitting, gardening and going for long walks. She always looked forward to attending the alumni events for the School of Nursing. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Kay will be truly missed by so many.
Our family will be forever grateful to the staff, nurses and doctors at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home for the care they provided to our mother. They listened to her stories about nursing, told her jokes, held her hand, and kept her company when we weren’t able to. They did everything possible to make her comfortable, especially during her final days.
Visitation Friday, July 31st from 2 – 4pm at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, Halifax.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the IWK Foundation or St. Vincent’s Nursing Home Foundation (for resident's recreational programming).
