Catherine (Kay) Marie Kennedy passed away on July 8, 2017 peacefully and surrounded by family at the QEII Health Sciences Centre Hospital in Halifax. Born in Sydney, NS, in 1926 to Catherine and Michael MacNeil, she grew up in Big Pond, Cape Breton, where she was nurtured and cared for by her grandmother and her uncle Stephen MacNeil.
Catherine attended Teachers College in Truro, NS, eventually moving to Halifax where she taught school at College Street and St. Francis Elementary and met and married Blair John Kennedy (deceased 1998) of Halifax. After taking a break from teaching following the births of her children, she eventually returned to teaching at various elementary schools around Halifax until her retirement at age 65.
Catherine is survived by daughters Patricia (Shawn) Kelly of Halifax, Paula (Dino DiMattia), Penny (Anthony Caldwell) and grandson Cole Caldwell, all of Ottawa. She is also survived by sisters Josephine Fox of Ottawa and Mora MacInnis of Sydney, as well as several nieces and nephews. Also left to mourn are the many members of Kay's extended "family" of neighbours and friends, whose company she enjoyed so much and who gave her such steadfast support. Never one for formalities, her door and her heart were always open to the kids, adults and animals around her. She thoroughly enjoyed all of them, making her home a magnet for everyone – whether they needed comfort or just a chat and a cup of tea.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 13 at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Agnes Parish, 6903 Mumford Rd., Halifax at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 14.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hope Cottage or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
