Born in Halifax on September 16, 1917, he was the son of the late George and Ida (Pineo) Smith. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed attending family events and watching with love and pride his grandchildren grow into adults.For a short time, Bill served as Town Clerk of Digby. He was employed with Nightingale Haymen Co. and the Department of Municipal Affairs. He retired in 1977 from the Department of Education where he was Assistant Deputy Minister of Education and Finance. Bill was a member of Ashburn Golf Club, Sunset Bowling League and the Halifax Commercial Club. He was also a member of First Baptist Church since 1929. Bill is survived by his daughter, Heather (Kevin) McNeil, Bedford; grandchildren, Alicia, Lauren and Megan; brother Gordon (Ellen), Toronto; niece, Lesley, Barrington; nephew, Stephen, Calgary; cousins, Peggy(Vern) Toole, Halifax; Pat, Vancouver. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Doris (Boots); daughter Marjorie in infancy; brothers, Donald, Richard; sister, Jeanne. Visitation will be Monday, December 13, 2-4 and 6-9p.m. from J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, December 14 at 11a.m. in First Baptist Church with Rev. John Boyd and Rev. Nelson Metcalfe officiating.
