After a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, Bruce Phillip Ellis passed away in Halifax, surrounded by his loved ones on the evening of November 27th, 2024, at the age of 66. He passed away peacefully, but not before enjoying his last Digby Scallop.
He is survived by his daughter Ashley Holton (Doug), granddaughters Anna and Allie, his mother, Jean Ellis, his siblings Chris Ellis (Candace) and Susan Wilson (Terry), and extended family and dear friends.
Bruce was an unforgettable character with unrivalled energy and the biggest heart. He will be dearly missed.
Born in Halifax on May 2nd, 1958, he was the pride and first born child of Phil and Jean Ellis, and held a very special place in the hearts of his grandparents, Odber and Elsie Ellis.
Music ran in the family - Bruce fell in love with playing the guitar at an early age. He especially enjoyed playing with his Uncle Embertt, cousin Bernadette and her husband, Ed. Bruce always enjoyed nature - you could usually find him at the parks or at the beach with his guitar in hand. As a young man, Bruce began working on the Scallop Dragger in Annapolis with Stuart Robertson - and he loved every minute of it. He would eventually work as a Safety Crew Member during the Highway construction, at the Shipyards, and even the Chronicle Herald. Later in life, Bruce would make his way to Toronto, where he would meet two of his dearest friends, Barb and Doug. Barb and Doug, the family would like to thank you for being his home away from home during the seven years he spent in Toronto before returning home in May of 2024.
Once home, Bruce spent as much time as he could getting to know his granddaughters, spending time with his daughter, taking care of his mother, visiting with old friends, and visiting his brother Chris’ family in Truro. He especially enjoyed going up to watch his Nephew, Everette at the races, and spending time on the water.
His sister Susan, was always there for Bruce throughout his life, and that didn’t change in his final months, taking him to his appointments and supporting him however she could. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and hospital staff of floor 7A at the Victoria General Hospital for the exceptional care they provided Bruce during his final days.
A service to celebrate Bruce will be held at the JA Snow Funeral Home at 339 Lacewood Drive in Halifax on Saturday, December 14th at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to your local homeless shelter
