Bernie will be missed by his wife, Eleanor, of 50 years and children; Belinda (Greg), Nancy and Sean; grandchildren Mya and Andrew and Kokanee his beloved cat. He is survived by siblings, Rose Mary, Theresa (Wig), Gerald, Lewis and many nieces and nephews. Bernie was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Odile and brothers Robert and Paul.
Bernie began his career with the province of Nova Scotia before proudly working as a passenger agent with Air Canada for 39+ years. The Air Canada gang at the Halifax International Airport were like a second family to him. His ‘airport’ stories of brief yet meaningful encounters with people of all walks of life highlighted what he enjoyed most about his work. To say he was a storyteller is an understatement – he was a ‘true’ people person and would talk to whomever would lend an ear.
In later years, going for groceries was "an event" for Bernie and anyone lucky enough to cross his path. Thank you to the friendly folks at the Wellington Bakery and Fall River Sobeys for your enduring customer service especially for lottery tickets and blueberry pie.
Bun Bun was an avid sportsman who enjoyed spending time in the outdoors. He was a founding member of the Wentworth Ski Club, a lifetime member of the Armdale Yacht Club and a member of the Atlantic Salmon Federation. His younger years were spent playing hockey, skiing in the Alps, sailing the Marblehead and Yacht racing around Nova Scotia; he relished life when he was walking in the woods, hunting, fishing, sailing or skiing. Creating a life with Eleanor and raising three children saw Bernie trading in his personal outdoor pursuits for time spent with family. He was keen to share his passion for the outdoors on family vacations, be a personal taxi for various extracurricular activities, and teach the life skills and values that encompass these endeavours.
Due to COVID restrictions, there will be no public service at this time. Arrangements and cremation have been entrusted to J. A. Snows Funeral Home, Halifax. There will be a grave sideservice for the family on December 7, 2020. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
